Fisheries definitely hit the bullseye with their stocking of the Goulburn river and Eildon pondage just prior to the season's opening over the weekend, as there have NEVER been so many big trout caught during opening weekend. With rainbow trout to over 6kg available to anyone fishing from many of the access points along the river and pondage it was as good a reason for anglers to flock to the region.

Customer Anel and mates are trout nuts who live for the chase on these fish, and the boys weren't disappointed while fishing the Goulburn over Saturday. The boys stocked up on some new lures in store and got stuck into numbers of thick rainbows at every point they fished.

The average rainbow trout coming from the river was around 3kg!

Customer Emmanuel fished the pondage early over the weekend but found the going hard, but scored 2 fat rainbows from the river once he switched tactics. Emmanuel ended up getting bites on small nymph style plastics fished off to the side of main runs in the river around Thornton.

Nick from Megabass Australia and mate Jason headed up to the river around Thornton to put some new plastics and lures to test and the trout weren't shy. While some sections of river were slow going with hardbodies, a switch to small bright coloured paddle tail plastics got the fishes attention. The rainbows found the subtle kick of the Megabass 'Hazedong' plastics too much to resist.

In the shallower runs tail sections the Megabass X-70 'jerkbait' style hardbodies were deadly on the trout. The 'Great Hunting' trout series of colours have been super effective when the fish have seen a few lures, which has definitely been over the past week.

Members of the Keysborough Angling Club also fished the Goulburn around 4 different locations from Thornton to Gilmore's bridge with a successful trip, and most members catching. The large rainbow trout made up most of the catch, with the largest fish weighing 5.1kg caught by member Renee Webber from the Breakaway section of river. A mixture of lures and powerbait/dough was used and all worked.

Customer Zoran also got into a few fish over the weekend when he could find a quieter spot on the river that didn't already have people fishing it. Fishing dough and powerbait on light coarse methods Zoran landed rainbow trout to 3kg and noticed similar sized fish caught nearby.

Customer Jozef and his wife Margaret fished the pondage early on Saturday morning to land some of the larger trout. Jozef and Margaret fished a mixture of specialist trout dough and powerbait on a feeder/berley method and found the large trout co-operative. The pair fished around the 'island' area on the lower pondage.
